What is cervical spinal myelopathy?
- Cervical spinal myelopathy is a condition in which the spinal cord in the cervical spine is damaged due to pressure or compression. This pressure can be caused by various factors, such as herniated discs, narrowing of the spinal canal or bony growths, trauma, etc.
- Symptoms can be varied and include problems such as impaired coordination, unsteady gait, loss of strength in the arms or legs, numbness and problems with fine motor skills. In advanced cases, bladder and bowel control problems may also occur.
- Diagnosis is based on a comprehensive clinical examination, supplemented by imaging procedures such as MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and CT (computerised tomography). These allow a detailed assessment of the structures in the area of the cervical spine.
- Our treatment approaches depend on the severity of the myelopathy. Conservative measures such as physiotherapy and medication can be considered in the early stages. Surgical intervention may be necessary if symptoms progress. Various procedures can be used here. The aim is to relieve pressure on the spinal cord (decompression) with or without stabilisation surgery (fusion) of the spine.
